WHAT IS THE ETL CERTIFICATION? AND THE UL REGULATION?
The ETL certification attests the conformity of the products to the US and CANADIAN safety requirements. ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories) is nothing more than an independent private organization that has been operating in this field for more than 100 years. The mark indicates that some samples of the products have been tested by recognized laboratories, the NRTL - Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory - to guarantee compliance with the product standards for the North American and Canadian markets (ANSI standard, UL standard, CSA standard, ASTM, NFPA) and the minimum security requirements set by these countries.
Each NRTL has a proprietary trademark (eg ETL, CSA and UL) which demonstrates the compliance with the minimum requirements set by national safety standards. According to UL / CSA regulations, all products with ETL and / or UL certification were found to be suitable to the standards defined by the certificate in relation to their potential fire, electric shock, mechanical hazards and all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations applicable.
The machine / product manufacturer must carry out an exhaustive analysis of the machine's technical risks: analysis of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic risks. Then he will consider the use and the applications, where is the destination of the product, the possible incorrect uses and the residues risks. The latters must be reported as monition on the machine and in the related documents.
The ETL Listed trademark is an indicator of product compliance with safety regulations, recognized and accepted by the North American and Canadian markets on a par with the UL and CSA certification.
HOW YOU CAN OBTAIN THE ETL CERTIFICATION
First of all it is necessary to carry out a regulatory framework of the products to be certified. It is important to remember that, unlike the European Directives, the same product can refer to two different regulations depending on its use.
The second step concerns the fulfillment of a document of preliminary technical analysis. The aim of this operation is to assess the method of the product manufacturing and the design, according to the standards.
At this point it is possible to request the ETL certification, according to the chosen methods. In order to request the certification you need to send a sample of the product to a recognized laboratory. Here they will start a series of tests aimed to verify and guarantee the compliance of the product to OSHA and ANSI standards.
At the end of the procedure, if the product is defined “compliances”, an ETL certificate will be issued and the manufacturer will be authorize to carry the ETL legal mark on all this type of manufactured items.
WHY SHOULD MY PRODUCTS BE ETL CERTIFIED?
Quick access to the global market
Request of a single product safety certification for all target markets using laboratory test packages
Ability to differentiate your company in a highly competitive market
DO YOU KNOW THAT TECHNOLOGY BSA IS ETL CERTIFICATOR?

WHAT DO WE MAKE FOR INTERTEK?
Thanks to Intertek, the team of Technology BSA makes progress: today we are ETL certificators for the assembly of electrical panels.
WHICH ARE THE MOST COMMON MARKS?
The presence of the trademark on an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product means that the product has been tested and meets the minimum electrical safety requirements established by the US and/or Canadian regulations.
ETL LISTED US
Safety mark. It certifies that the products have been tested by the certifier and they meet the minimum requirements of the product safety standards prescribed for North America.
One of the most commonly used UL marks. The product with this mark complies with UL safety requirements and the manufacturer declares the compliance of these requirements during time
UL RECOGNISED COMPONENT
Some components are part of a larger product or system. You can certify also these specific components with this UL certification. These components can be semi-finished products
UL CLASSIFICATION MARK
This mark indicates the evaluation of the product in relation to specific properties, such as a limited set of risks or uses under particular conditions
UL FUNCTIONAL SAFETY
Functional safety certification. This mark certifies the products’ safety in relation to the correct functioning of control systems and softwares
The evaluation of the product can also be carried out during its functioning, in UL laboratories or at the manufacturers’ facilities
FOCUS ON STANDARDS - REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CERTIFICATION OF THE ELECTRIC PANEL
Machineries shipped to the USA must comply with some requirements related to the construction of electrical panels. In this specific case, the electrical components must comply with the installation code NEC 2005 art 409 "industrial machinery", and with the voluntary standard UL 508-A "Industrial Control Panel". To achieve the canadian market, you need to comply with other requirements in order to obtain the certification: CEC 22-2 part 1 installation code and CSA 22-2 N ° 14 "Industrial Control Panel". If we refer to machine-tools for wood, plastic and metal processing, you must apply other requirements defined by the NFPA code 79. The UL-508 regulation is really important for the certification of electrical panels according to the standards. This certification is voluntary, but it is better if you have it because it is a good way to avoid disputes with local authorities and insurances.
