WHAT IS THE UL CERTIFICATION?
The UL Certifications (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) attest the conformity to the USA and CANADIAN safety requirements of the products that require it.
The mark indicates that some samples of the products have been tested by recognized laboratories (NRTL-Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) and are according to the standards defined by the certification in relation to their potential risks of fire or shock, mechanical hazards, performance under specified conditions, regulatory codes and all OSHA regulations applicable.
The machine / product manufacturer must carry out an exhaustive analysis of the machine's technical risks: analysis of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic risks. Then he will consider the use and the applications, where is the destination of the product, the possible incorrect uses and the residues risks. The latters must be reported as monition on the machine and in the related documents.
HOW YOU CAN OBTAIN THE UL CERTIFICATION
First of all it is necessary to carry out a regulatory framework of the products to be certified. It is important to remember that, unlike the European Directives, the same product can refer to two different regulations depending on its use.
The second step concerns the fulfillment of a document of preliminary technical analysis. The aim of this operation is to assess the method of the product manufacturing and the design, according to the standards.
At this point it is possible to request the UL certification, according to the chosen methods. In order to request the certification you need to send a sample of the product to a recognized laboratory. Here they will start a series of tests aimed to verify and guarantee the compliance of the product to OSHA and ANSI standards.
At the end of the procedure, if the product is defined “compliances”, a certificate will be issued by UL Inc. and the manufacturer will be authorize to carry the UL legal mark on all this type of manufactured items.

FOCUS ON STANDARDS - REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ELECTRIC PANEL
Machineries shipped to the USA must comply with some requirements related to the construction of electrical panels. In this specific case, the electrical components must comply with the installation code NEC 2005 art 409 "industrial machinery", and with the voluntary standard UL 508-A "Industrial Control Panel".
To achieve the canadian market, you need to comply with other requirements in order to obtain the certification: CEC 22-2 part 1 installation code and CSA 22-2 N ° 14 "Industrial Control Panel".
If we refer to machine-tools for wood, plastic and metal processing, you must apply other requirements defined by the NFPA code 79. The UL-508 regulation is really important for the certification of electrical panels according to the standards.
This certification is voluntary, but it is better if you have it because it is a good way to avoid disputes with local authorities and insurances.
